Anger Counselling Group

What is this group and what will I learn?
This 8-week in-person group are for individuals who are concerned with their behaviours related to anger. This group will help you tolerate and express the emotion of anger in effective ways. This will give you the freedom to make choices in how to respond to others, keep your anger level low, think clearly and make choices that help regain your esteem and confidence, and to create and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships.
 
In addition to learning skills, you will also be processing your experiences with anger with others and a therapist in a group setting. As each week will build on the next, commitment to the entire group is required. This group will be a closed group.
 
Over the 8 weeks you will learn:
Week 1: Understanding anger and it’s basic function. Identifying personal goals for the rest of the program.
Week 2: Anger and how it presents itself. Pros/cons to anger. Self-monitoring skills are introduced.
Week 3: What fuels anger. We look at hot triggers or buttons that cause anger. Reflection on your personal relationship with anger is explored.
Week 4: Connection train – connecting our thoughts, feelings and behaviour in the context of anger. Identifying unhelpful thought patterns and how to “rewire.”
Week 5: Grief. We examine unacknowledged loss and unresolved grief with discussion of exercises, rituals and ceremonies to facilitate the grieving process.
Week 6: Relaxation and grounding techniques. We learn skills on how to calm the physiological arousal that comes with the emotion of anger.
Week 7: Communication skills. Reflection and examination on current patterns of communication. This week we learn effective assertiveness skills.
Week 8: Bringing it all together. Skills learned will be applied to various scenarios. An imagery rehearsal exercise will be used in class for “exposure” with feedback from your peers.
 
This group is delivered using a cognitive behavioural therapy perspective on addressing anger. We explore and identify the relationship of anger with our thoughts, feelings and behaviours to make change.
 
**If you are mandated by the court system to take an anger management course, please contact your legal team as there may be specific programs geared towards your treatment goals**
 
Dates and times:
This group will run for 8 weeks with 1x/weekly 90 minute session.

Cost:
$500 for the entire 8 weeks. You may pay in full at time of registering. A deposit of $125 will be requested if you opt for our payment plan which will go towards the cost of the group. Please contact the center if you have any questions or would like to use the payment plan.
