The approach in working with individuals who have challenges with substance use or other addictive behaviours is to be respectful and compassionate. Counselling should be empowering and motivating for the individual to make a change. The use of substances or behaviour is viewed on a continuum from non-problematic to problematic use. Treatment is individualized both in goals and methods. Behaviours are seen in the context of the individual’s social, interpersonal and vocational environment. Therapists tend to use a multicultural perspective to understand and meet the needs of diverse populations.
An individual can expect a screening and assessment of the substances or behaviours, followed by treatment planning that may include a referral and coordination to other services (e.g. detox, treatment centre, methadone program). Counselling can include individual, group or family counselling. Families and loved ones can benefit from education sessions on addiction. Communities can also benefit from education on addiction. The session is collaborative in nature in order to facilitate motivation for change.
Addictions counselling can be beneficial for any individual concerned about their substance use or behaviours (e.g. gambling).
