There are various examples of losses. However, it is the significance of that relationship that determines what kind of loss it is for the individual. Pet loss, loss of family home due to fire or repossession, loss of identity, sobriety (loss of drug of choice), loss of independence, loss of loved one to medical illness, Alzheimer’s, sudden death or homicide, miscarriage, loss of a relationship, “empty nest”, retirement. These examples show the range of experiences of what can be described as a loss.
There is not one specific modality or treatment to address grief and bereavement. There are prominent therapists in the field who specialize
in loss and grief and have developed various approaches for coping with loss.
