Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

CPT is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD. Sessions typically take 8-14 sessions but this can vary. CPT helps people recognize how trauma has changed their view about themselves, others, and the world. CPT helps people identify the negative thoughts created by the trauma. These are called “stuck points” because they keep people stuck and get in the way of recovery from PTSD. CPT helps people think through their stuck points and develop more adaptive thoughts and perspectives.

CPT has four parts:
1. Education about PTSD and CPT – overview of symptoms and the cognitive perspective of CPT
2. Processing the trauma – The therapist will use writing assignments to focus on thinking through parts of the trauma event.
3. Challenging thoughts about trauma – each session builds on the previous, learning skills on how to challenge thoughts that get in the way of recovery. You will be encouraged to complete worksheets at home.
4. Trauma themes – the last few sessions of CPT focus on themes of safety, trust, power & control, esteem, and intimacy. Often people who have PTSD have problems in one or more of these areas. Worksheets will be used to challenge thoughts related to these themes.

CPT is an effective way of treating PTSD. A course of CPT includes 8-12 weekly sessions, 50-90 minutes long.
