Prolonged exposure for PTSD (PE)

PE is an exposure-based therapy that invites you to gradually approach your trauma-related memories, feelings and situations that you have been avoiding since the trauma event. By approaching not avoiding, you can decrease your PTSD symptoms.

How does it work?
Avoidance is a flagship symptom for those who have PTSD. They avoid anything that reminds them of the trauma. Although beneficial for the short term, research shows avoidance maintains PTSD symptoms. By approaching what you avoid, symptoms can decrease. PE helps you decrease avoidance by talking about the traumatic event in a safe environment and confronting safe situations that you have been avoiding.

What can I expect?
Your therapist will provide education on the symptoms of trauma and provide an overview of the program. They will teach a coping strategy (breathing) to help reduce anxiety during your exposure. In sessions, you will be exposed to your memory and outside of sessions, you will engage in activities you have been avoiding. A structured plan will be put in place to do this. Each session will be recorded on your personal cell or recorder.

How long are the sessions?
This treatment involves 8-15 weekly sessions (about three months). Sessions range from 60-90 minutes.

Will I have homework?
yes. you will practice some of the things you have avoided as a result of the trauma using the structured plan developed in the session. You will also listen to your recording each day. Doing these activities in between sessions will help you get the most out of PE.
