Trauma-focused psychotherapies

These therapies are considered the ‘gold star’ approach and the most recommended type of treatment for PTSD. They primarily focus on the memory of the index trauma event. The following modalities have the most researched support for effectiveness for those who have a confirmed diagnosis of PTSD:

  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) – It involves bringing the event to memory and talking about it. It also helps to approach activities you have avoided as a result of the Trauma.
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) – looks at your thoughts about how and why the trauma event happened. A structured approach using assignments helps challenges unhelpful thoughts about the event.
  • Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) – involves the recall of the trauma memory to mind while following prompts by the therapist to follow a back-and-forth movement or sound (e.g. finger waving, light, tone

Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
This evidence-based approach can be used for other stressor-related disorders or stressful experiences where the focus in on the thoughts about the event and the therapist assists in processing, understanding, and finding the meaning of the event.
